Winter Haven, FL – A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded on Lake Roy as 12-year-old Noah Alfred Gomez lost his life in a devastating boating accident. The young boy, who was enjoying a spring break outing with his father, younger brother, and cousin, tragically drowned after being caught in rough waters.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) confirmed the recovery of Noah’s body at approximately 4:43 p.m. on Tuesday. Sheriff Grady Judd provided details in a press conference, expressing sorrow over the incident and highlighting the valiant efforts of Noah’s father to save his son.
A Family Outing Turns Tragic
Noah’s father had taken him, his 9-year-old brother Javier Gomez, and his 10-year-old cousin Gael Vasquez for a fishing and swimming trip on Lake Roy. The family had launched their boat into the lake, hoping to enjoy a day together. However, the weather conditions took a dangerous turn, with strong gusts of wind reaching up to 30 miles per hour, making the waters increasingly rough.
As the boys swam near the boat, they quickly struggled against the powerful waves. Realizing the danger, Noah’s father acted swiftly to pull the children back onto the boat. He successfully rescued Javier and Gael, but Noah had drifted farther from the boat.
Desperate to save his son, the father jumped into the water, managing to get Noah onto his back. However, as he attempted to swim back, the 12-year-old slipped off and sank into nearly 20 feet of water.

One of the children aboard the boat immediately called 911. Emergency responders from PCSO, Winter Haven Police Department, and Polk County Fire Rescue rushed to the scene, deploying marine units equipped with underwater sonar devices, drones, and helicopters in a frantic search for Noah.
Despite their best efforts, it was too late. Noah’s body was recovered nearly two hours later at the bottom of the lake.
