Brian Vogt Denver Colorado Obituary: CEO at Denver Botanic Gardens died tragically

DENVER, CO – The Denver Botanic Gardens community is grieving the loss of its longtime CEO, Brian Vogt, who passed away this week. Vogt, who had led the Gardens since 2007, was widely admired as a visionary leader, mentor, and friend. His transformative leadership helped shape the Gardens into the thriving cultural and educational hub it is today.

Under Vogt’s guidance, the Denver Botanic Gardens became a sanctuary of beauty, healing, and connection, embodying his dream of creating a “garden for all people.” His close friend and former board chair, Dr. Jandel Allen-Davis, reflected on his vision, noting that most of his aspirations for the Gardens had come to life through his tireless dedication.

A Legacy of Growth and Inspiration

Board of Trustees Chair Mary Lee Chin honored Vogt’s immense contributions, saying, “Brian’s influence on Denver Botanic Gardens was deep and lasting, shaping its growth and beauty for nearly two decades. His legacy will continue to inspire all who walk these paths. ‘Onward’ was more than just one of his favorite sayings—it was a testament to his spirit and optimism. That spirit will be carried forward in all the Gardens do.”

Deborah Jordy, executive director of the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD), echoed those sentiments, emphasizing Vogt’s impact on the broader community. “Brian was one of the true visionary leaders in our community. All that is great about Denver Botanic Gardens owes its origin to his boundless optimism and bottomless kindness. It is hard to come to terms with the loss of someone so fundamental to the fabric of our metro area. But, as was Brian’s way, he has quietly but steadfastly left us all a legacy of grace, beauty, and connection that will stand for generations.”

A Path Forward

Though Vogt’s passing leaves a tremendous void, the Denver Botanic Gardens remains committed to carrying out his mission. The Board of Trustees has appointed Jennifer Riley-Chetwynd, the Gardens’ Director of Marketing and Social Responsibility, as interim CEO.

“Brian will be profoundly missed,” Riley-Chetwynd said. “We will strive to maintain the standard of excellence he has built, working in partnership with the Gardens’ board and staff.”

The Gardens and the broader Denver community extend their deepest condolences to Brian Vogt’s family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. While his loss is deeply felt, his vision and leadership will continue to bloom for generations to come. Brian Vogt funeral memorial services will be released soon…
