Former player and basketball coach Danny Sumner and his 6-year-old son, Donovan Sumner, died in a boating accident while fishing in a Fredericksburg water on Saturday.
The deadly drowning accident happened on Saturday, March 22, 2025. The Sumner family released the following statement following the incident: “We lost our family member Danny Sumner and his eldest son, Donavan (6 years old), during a father-and-son fishing accident.”

Danny Sumner was a well-known basketball player. He was coaching at Brook Point High School in Stamford, VA, before his death. The drowning incident has left the student community at Stafford County Public Schools devastated and heartbroken. A student described the beloved husband to Madeline Sumner as a “good man.”
